I learned English at school, a long time ago… I remember my English teachers and having fun during classes, but honestly, I don’t remember studying grammar, structures or tenses. The bottom line is: I learned English. I passed the exams, it was my favorite subject and I remember my teachers saying: “Hey Steban, you’re good at this”.
When I was 21 years old I went to
One day, I was waiting for the metro and this American girl needed help. She asked me how to go somewhere; I perfectly understood her English and I knew the answer to her question. But somehow, when I was going to speak… words came out in French. I mean, I thought about the answer in English, I built the sentence in my head in English but as soon as a pronounced a word… it came out in French. Yeah, my brain was messed up!
I thought “You have to go this way” and automatically my sentence was “Tu dois aller par là”. I hadn’t used my English in a while but this was just crazy… I could use my English in my head, I could think in English, but only for me… what did this mean? I lost my English, it was gone! I’m sure the girl thought: “Dude, can you help me or not?”
Then I came back to my country and after some practice I recovered my English. Now I think about that American lady and fortunately it’s just a funny story, not a big deal. But be careful! Learning more than one foreign language could make some cool “mixture” in your head. Nothing to worry about, though. And the solution is very simple: Practice, practice and PRACTICE!
